try advertising on freecycle wanted section in your area, i have seen them on there before and they are all free. save money.

I wouldnt touch a second hand bat , the price of a new one is not too high, depending on what you want.On a Second hand the wood may be dead , not oiled properly , or badly repaired , not always noticable but not always good.
